How to find similar websites for free

Let’s take the following scenario: one of your favourite websites is down, or closes or something else happens and you’re no longer able to access it. Here’s where a services like WebsitesLike.org comes in handy. This free service allows you to find similar websites to the one you’re trying to replace.

Someone hinted me about this service and I though of giving it a try and see if it lives up to the expectations. It’s not just a good service to replace a news source, but also a way to find similar websites to yours if you want to make new friends, guest post or just study the competition. Either way, a service so find similar websites is useful.

This is probably the easiest to use service I’ve seen in a while: on the main page you have a big Enter Website of Keyword text input box. That’s where you write the name of the website or service you want to find and hit Search. Wait a second or two and you’ll be presented with a list of websites the system has found. The most similar ones are on top, of course.

The thing is this service has a limited number of websites already indexed in it’s database. GadgetRoad was found because it’s an old site, but one of my three years old tablet site was nowhere to be seen. That’s probably one of the biggest problems if you’re looking to find similar resources for a small (relatively) unknown site. Also when I’ve searched for the word ‘gadget’ Gizmodo.com and Engadget.com were not in the top results, as it would be normal, so precision is not quite there, depending on what you’re searching for.

Anyway, since it’s free and sometimes provides adequate results I’d say this is useful service, which I hope gets improved over time. The potential is there!
