Samsung has announced that Spotify is now available to download on its range of Smart TVs

 

The firm is the first television manufacturer to offer the service on its boxes, which allows users to stream music for a monthly fee. Premium account holders simply have to download the application directly on to their Smart TV – a solid internet connection is essential – Blu-ray player or home theatre system, and can immediately access their playlists once they’ve logged in.

“We are thrilled to debut the new Spotify app on Samsung Smart TVs, which will make listening to favourite tracks even easier for our customers who will no longer have to worry about connecting cables from their laptop or tablet to their Hi-Fi equipment. For the first time, they will be able to use their Samsung Smart TVs and home theatre systems to enjoy Spotify’s huge music library from the comfort of their living room,” said Dan Saunders, Director of Content Services, Samsung Electronics, Europe.

“It’s our dream to make all the world’s music available instantly to everyone, everywhere, and bringing our service to Samsung Smart TVs is taking us another step closer to turning this dream into reality,” said Pascal de Mul, Global Head of Hardware partnerships, Spotify. “The television is at the heart of most people’s home entertainment experience, so it is a natural fit to make our music service available on internet-connected Smart TVs.”

TomTom Navigation finally arrives on Android

The TomTom Navigation app is available to download from Google Play today but it appears the Sat Nav Supremo isn't compatbile with the most popular handsets

 

Although we got a glimpse of the TomTom Navigation app back at IFA last month, its now fully available to own on Android, having been around for some time as a downloadable app on Apple's iOS devices.

Unfortunately, that announcement seems to be overshadowed somewhat by a revelation that the app doesn't work with top devices like the Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One X or the Google Nexus 7 tablet.

The latest maps are included on the app and stored offline, so you won't lose your navigation even if you drop signal during the journey. Or suffer the wrath of the roaming data charge.

But, that's a bit of a moot point if you're one of the many HTC or Samsung users unable to use the app. According to TomTom, the Navigation app works with any device running Android 2.2 or higher and with an 800 x 480 or greater resolution.

The TomTom Navigation Android app is designed primarily for drivers and offers quarterly updates to ensure your smartphone is kept stocked with the latest maps.

Mapping applications have taken centre stage recently with the recent Apple Maps fiasco and the rumours of Google bringing Street View to its mobile app. It seems TomTom's incompatibility is the latest chapter in the saga.

“TomTom has a history of making great navigation applications. Our existing iPhone app gets fantastic customer feedback and regularly wins awards,” said Corinne Vigreux, managing director of TomTom (Consumer).

“Today, we are bringing this world-class navigation experience to millions of Android smartphone users for the first time.”

We should mention though, this isn't your typical 69p download. The TomTom Android app is available at a special introductory price of £30.99 for the UK/Ireland map and £39.99 for Western Europe.

There are plenty of features thrown in as well: HD Traffic gives you live traffic updates and real-time speed camera alerts come in handy when you're going a little faster than is strictly necessary.

If you're device is compatible with the app then you're still going to need 3.7GB of free storage space to complete the download.

As soon as the verdict was delivered Monday, the trial moved into the patents phase of the case, with Oracle making its opening statement. The trial is in three parts, to address copyrights, patents, and then any damages Oracle should receive.

But although the patents phase is under way, the copyright phase is far from concluded. As well as the outstanding issue of fair use, Judge William Alsup , who is hearing the case, must decide whether Oracle's Java APIs (application programming interfaces) can be copyrighted at all under U.S. law.

Google has until late Monday to submit its arguments on that issue to Alsup. The judge has not said when he will rule on the law question, but some observers expect it to happen before the damages phase of the trial begins in about two weeks.

"We appreciate the jury's efforts and know that fair use and infringement are two sides of the same coin," Google said in a statement sent via email.
