Apple publishes Samsung tablet ruling on website

After months of courtroom-based bickering Apple and Samsung have laid down their swords after a judge ruled that Samsung's products were not infringing on Apple's design

Apple has today posted a statement about the Apple vs Samsung ruling as ordered by the judge, Apple will also have to publish a number of ads in certain leading UK publications where it will have to state that Samsung's products do not infringe on Apple's own designs.

The statement is suitably vague, as is expected, but does contain the vital statement which confirms that Samsung have not copied the iPad in creating their own products.

"The Galaxy Tab 10.1, Tab 8.9 and Tab 7.7 do not infringe Apple’s registered design No. 0000181607-0001."

The statement then goes on to quote the judge's ruling which includes the famous admittance that the judge thought that Apple's products were cooler than Samsung's.

The ruling only applies to the UK so while it means the end of the line for both companies here Samsung has already had to pay Apple $1 billion in damages in the US and had its products banned in Germany.

In a surprising turn of events, Apple has published a UK court ruling on its website, acknowledging that Samsung's Galaxy tablets did not infringe on Apple's design patents. This move, stemming from a legal battle that has spanned across continents, offers a rare glimpse into the complex and often contentious relationship between two of the world's leading tech giants.

The Background

The saga began in 2011 when Apple filed lawsuits against Samsung in several countries, alleging that Samsung's Galaxy tablets closely imitated the design of the iPad. Apple claimed that Samsung had infringed on its design patents, which protect the overall aesthetic and design elements of a product. The ensuing legal battles saw victories and losses on both sides, but the UK case stood out for its unique and somewhat ironic conclusion.

The UK Court's Verdict

In July 2012, Judge Colin Birss of the UK High Court ruled that Samsung's Galaxy tablets were not "cool" enough to be mistaken for Apple's iPads. The judge pointed out that while there were similarities between the two devices, the Galaxy tablets lacked the "understated and extreme simplicity" of the iPad. He famously noted that Samsung's products were unlikely to be confused with Apple's because they simply did not have the same "cool" factor.

The Mandate to Publish

Following the ruling, the UK court ordered Apple to publish a notice on its website and in British newspapers, acknowledging that Samsung did not infringe on its design patents. This was intended to correct any potentially misleading impression created by Apple's allegations. Apple initially complied, but the notice included subtle jabs at Samsung and references to other rulings that had favored Apple, prompting the court to demand a more straightforward acknowledgment.

Apple's Compliant Notice

In November 2012, Apple finally published a more straightforward notice on its UK website. The notice, accessible via a link on Apple's homepage, clearly states the court's decision and includes a copy of the ruling. This act of public acknowledgment is a rare and significant moment in the world of corporate litigation, where companies often go to great lengths to maintain a competitive edge and protect their public image.

The Implications

This development underscores several important points about the tech industry and corporate legal strategies:

  1. The Complexity of Patent Laws: Patent laws, particularly those related to design, are highly complex and subject to interpretation. What constitutes infringement in one jurisdiction may not be viewed the same way in another.

  2. The Role of Public Perception: Both Apple and Samsung are acutely aware of the power of public perception. Legal victories and defeats can influence consumer opinions and market dynamics, making public acknowledgments like this one significant.

  3. The Ongoing Tech Rivalries: The battle between Apple and Samsung is part of a broader competition among tech giants vying for market dominance. These legal skirmishes are just one aspect of a multifaceted rivalry that includes innovation, marketing, and strategic alliances.

Conclusion

The publication of the UK court ruling on Apple's website marks a notable moment in the ongoing legal battles between Apple and Samsung. It serves as a reminder of the intricate dance between competition and litigation in the tech industry. As these two titans continue to innovate and compete, consumers and industry watchers alike remain keenly interested in how such legal battles shape the future of technology.

New Apple iMac 2012 unveiled

If unveiling a new MacBook wasn't enough then Apple has just unveiled a all-new iMac which has broken all the rules by forgoing an optical drive

Apple has today unveiled the brand-new 2012 iMac which is a staggering 80 per cent thinner over the old model and combines some brand-new features to give users a much faster experience.

Apple 2012 iMac specs:

The Apple 2012 iMac is hugely powerful featuring quad-core i5 or i7 processors while you'll be able to start with 8GB RAM with the ability to expand.

2012 iMac will ship in two versions a 21.5-inch and a 27-inch along with a HD webcam and four USB 3.0 ports. One of the biggest differences is the loss of the optical drive with Apple advising that those who still want an optical drive will need a buy a separate one.

Nokia reports £787m loss but shares rise

Nokia's shares have risen sharply in Helsinki, despite a record sixth consecutive year where the Finnish company made a loss

Nokia announced today that sales of its flagship Lumia range during its third quarter are down 19% from the same period last year. In real terms, the company shifted 2.9 million phones compared to 4 million in 2011.

The latest figures make for disappointing reading, especially considering Nokia was the biggest manufacturer of phones in the world for more than a decade. But the Finnish firm continues to lag behind the likes of Apple and Samsung in the innovation (and marketing) department.

But hold on just a second, there could be light at the end of the tunnel. Shares in Nokia increased in value by 9 percent following the announcement thanks to better-than-expected results and a licensing agreement struck with Amazon.

Nokia and Amazon agreed a deal in back August to bring Nokia Maps exclusively to the Kindle family of tablets.

Part of the reason for Nokia's ropey financial performance this year is the announcement that Microsoft would not update existing WP7 Lumias to Windows Phone 8.

Nokia chief Stephen Elop stated the slow down in the second half of the quarter was due to users holding out for the WP8-toting Lumia 920 and 820 handsets arriving from early November.

The Finnish company continues to ship feature phones and posted Q3 sales of 76.6 million units - up four per cent quarter-on-quarter. But again - that total is still down 15 percent year-on-year.

Back in smartphone land, Microsoft is due to announce Windows Phone 8 on October 29th where they are expected to openly demonstrate the new Nokia Lumia smartphones amongst their other device manufacturers.

New iPad mini pictures show 4:3 aspect ratio

Judging by pictures posted online today, the iPad mini will not feature the same stretched 16:9 aspect ratio sported by the iPhone 5

Of course, nothing's for certain given the long history of speculation surrounding any new Apple creation. Just to be sure though, we've collected all the iPad mini release date, price, specs, news and rumours into one place for your reading pleasure.

These latest snaps were taken by parts firm ETrade Supply and seem to confirm that the new device will feature the same 4:3 aspect ratio as the current iPad models.

The screen in the picture measures 162 x 124mm and, according to text on the back, was manufactured for Apple by LG Display.

Other pictures also show the purported battery pack for the iPad mini with specs listing it as a 4490mAh Li-ion Polymer Battery running at 3.722, complete with model number.

Apple is almost certain to unveil the iPad mini over in San Francisco on October 23, after press invites promised Cupertino has a “little more” to show off.

Keep it tuned to T3 for our live blog of the entire event when Apple takes to the stage next week.

Google Maps for iPhone 5 screen shots leaked

Maybe Eric Schmidt was being coy when he claimed that Google were not working on an iOS version of Google Maps last month as today screen shots have leaked

A developer has leaked the first screen shots of what appears to be a native version of Google Maps running on iOS 6 on the iPhone 5 sparking rumours that in fact Google are working on an alternative to the troubled Apple Maps.

Developer Ben Guild posted the images on his blog of Google Maps running on an iPhone 5 which is currently in early testing. According to his source it’s a huge improvement over the previous maps app and brings across features previously only available on Android phones.

The app is vector based which means that it only loads what is required to look great on the page without having to reload the entire map which was a significant weakness of the previous iOS version and cuts down on data usage significantly.

The two-finger map rotation is also present so you can keep track of wherever you go on your iPhone and most importantly it looks great on the 4-inch iPhone 5 display.

It's not yet known when Google Maps for iOS 6 will appear or even if it will at all as Google hasn't yet officially stated they will be releasing an alternative.

Bang & Olufsen unveils new BeoVision 11 luxury TV

Bang & Olufsen has revealed the latest addition to its premium TV range, the BeoVision 11, which will go on sale in selected stores today

The BeoVision 11 is the Danish company’s new luxury TV and, as such, boasts all the technology and specifications you would expect to find for the €5,000+ price tag.

Available in 40-inch, 46-inch and 55-inch variants, the display itself is a 200Hz, LED-based, LCD screen capable of 2D, 3D and Smart TV functionality. In fact, it’s the first TV to feature Bang & Olufsen’s own Smart TV platform, meaning you can easily pull content from the likes of iPlayer and YouTube.

Given that Bang & Olufsen is mostly known for producing high-grade audio equipment, it’s no surprise that one of the highlights of the BeoVision 11 is the on-board speakers. The custom-made left and right channel speakers are set directly below the screen giving the BeoVision 11 a square (rather than standard widescreen) appearance. The channel speakers each include a ¾” tweeter, 2” midrange and 4” bass speaker with a changeable cover panel available in various different colours - to match your décor.

BeoVision 11

T3 was invited to a demo of the BeoVision 11 and we were impressed by both the sound clarity and volume coming from the speakers, not to mention the range of customisations available for each audio setting.

Although, if you just want to sit back and watch, the BeoVision 11 has a built-in signal processing algorithm that automatically swaps the audio mode based on what you’re watching – sports, movies, etc.

Unsurprisingly, the BeoVision 11 supports up to ten audio channels, letting you connect an entire surround sound system to the TV and configuring it yourself any number of ways. It’s a new step for Bang & Olufsen, from a traditionally closed system to effectively letting you change the tiniest aspects of audio or video performance.

The company has even made a technical sound guide downloadable from its website that gives detailed instructions and information about the various tunings and settings available on the TV.

Audio expertise has been matched in the video department with a number of features you’d expect on a TV at this price range. The BeoView 11 has been fitted with a 360-degree light sensor that channels ambient light down through an acrylic prism to automatically adjust brightness and contrast.

Again, when T3 saw a demo of this in action, the differences in the picture were certainly noticeable when the sensor was doing its thing.

There are pre-set picture modes also on offer for movie-watching and gaming and, as an added touch, when you hit the standby button the picture slides shut from either side giving you a “curtain” type effect that looks very nice.

BeoVision 11

Bang & Olufsen hasn’t skimped on the connections either. Round the back of the BeoVision 11 you’ll find six HDMI ports, two USB slots and an Ethernet port and even a dedicated slot for Apple TV.

While the majority of these are down at the bottom, a single HDMI, USB and headphone jack have been built into an easily-accessible pop-out slot at the top of the box – meaning you can quickly plug in a flash drive and start watching.

The BeoVision 11 is DLNA compatible, meaning you can stream music from your smartphone or NAS drive, but the built-in Wi-Fi also means you can connect just about anything to the TV. Bang & Olufsen has also released an app for both iOS and Android letting you control the TV from your tablet or smartphone.

The release of the BeoVision 11 comes at a rather critical time for Bang & Olufsen. The company has just announced that sales of its luxury audio and video products have fallen by 20% from June to August, and the corollary was a dip in share price by 4.4%. The fact that the traditional luxury products aren’t selling quite as well at the moment was offset somewhat by the success of the B&O Play brand that was launched at the start of the year.

B&O Play produces more affordable products target towards the younger consumers and features the likes of the B&O BeoPlay A9 and the B&O BeoPlay A3, both of which have been well received. Sales of B&O Play products have risen 95% in the same three month period, the company said on Wednesday.

The BeoVision 11 arrives in selected Bang & Olufsen stores today and is available with a silver or black frame and a rear cabinet in either black or white.

The BeoVision 11 is priced at €5,995 (£4,829) for the 40-inch model, €7,595 (£6,116) for the 46-inch model and €9,995 (£8,048) for the 55-inch model. Additional extras are also available in the form of an integrated hard drive €700 (£564) stationary TV stand €395 (£318) or a motorised wall bracket €795 (£640).

TomTom Navigation finally arrives on Android

The TomTom Navigation app is available to download from Google Play today but it appears the Sat Nav Supremo isn't compatbile with the most popular handsets

Although we got a glimpse of the TomTom Navigation app back at IFA last month, its now fully available to own on Android, having been around for some time as a downloadable app on Apple's iOS devices.

Unfortunately, that announcement seems to be overshadowed somewhat by a revelation that the app doesn't work with top devices like the Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One X or the Google Nexus 7 tablet.

The latest maps are included on the app and stored offline, so you won't lose your navigation even if you drop signal during the journey. Or suffer the wrath of the roaming data charge.

But, that's a bit of a moot point if you're one of the many HTC or Samsung users unable to use the app. According to TomTom, the Navigation app works with any device running Android 2.2 or higher and with an 800 x 480 or greater resolution.

The TomTom Navigation Android app is designed primarily for drivers and offers quarterly updates to ensure your smartphone is kept stocked with the latest maps.

Mapping applications have taken centre stage recently with the recent Apple Maps fiasco and the rumours of Google bringing Street View to its mobile app. It seems TomTom's incompatibility is the latest chapter in the saga.

“TomTom has a history of making great navigation applications. Our existing iPhone app gets fantastic customer feedback and regularly wins awards,” said Corinne Vigreux, managing director of TomTom (Consumer).

“Today, we are bringing this world-class navigation experience to millions of Android smartphone users for the first time.”

We should mention though, this isn't your typical 69p download. The TomTom Android app is available at a special introductory price of £30.99 for the UK/Ireland map and £39.99 for Western Europe.

There are plenty of features thrown in as well: HD Traffic gives you live traffic updates and real-time speed camera alerts come in handy when you're going a little faster than is strictly necessary.

If you're device is compatible with the app then you're still going to need 3.7GB of free storage space to complete the download.

Have you used the TomTom Navigation app or are you unable to download it? What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comment box below.

Viruses: The Best Thieves Today!

Viruses have become a direct route to quick/easy money by hackers and thieves alike. By confusing end-users into thinking that they are more infected than they actually are, viruses manage to extract money from innocent computer users that they most likely will never see again. That being said, in this article I would like to provide some basic information about these threats in order to build awareness in general computer users.

First, if a message or pop-up on your computer asks for money, you should always do research before doing anything. In fact, a safe habit would be to never send money online unless you're on a trusted website that you know is legitimate from experience. This should be in the back of your mind as you approach the rest of the information in this article.

To provide a brief overview, viruses can affect all sorts of levels of functionality on a computer. The viruses I am addressing in this article inform the end-user that their computer is infected with viruses that are not actually present (other than the virus itself!) in order to cause panic. The end-user is offered a solution for some amount of money, which will provide them with nothing in the long-run except for a continuation of the virus they already have. This is not a virus cleaning

If a virus is named for a specific function, it is more than likely fake. Viruses are not usually named by the specific thing that they target, so if a pop-up informs you that an "identity.theft.virus" has infected your computer, it is most likely fake. Some of these virus names are very comical, so approach them with a sense of humor for the best results.

"Many viruses now falsely tell users that their hard drive is dying or another hardware problem is present," said a representative from a Southfield computer repair shop. In my years of experience, I've very rarely, if ever, experienced an accurate assessment of hardware condition from within the operating system. If the errors are very specific, it's probably a fraud. Even further, if something has misspellings or just plain doesn't look right, it's also probably illegitimate.

While there are plenty of other ways that viruses affect computers today, this is probably the most common way that I've witnessed in my line of work. The most important thing is to be careful whenever something unfamiliar pops up on your computer. If you get infected, do not panic and immediately shut off your computer and take it to a trusted computer repair store. You risk losing money and time if you attempt to fix something you're not comfortable with. In future articles, I'll address safe-surfing habits to avoid viruses altogether.

I have been a technician for over 10 years, focusing on efficient, easy-to-understand computer repair. I strive for people to have at least a minor conceptual grasp of how their computers work in order to permit the best possible computing experience. I currently perform computer repair for a company in the Metro Detroit area.
