New Apple iPad 4th generation launched

The new Apple with Retina Display is the LTE updated version of the iPad 3 which was unveiled just a few months ago and now features a faster A6X processor

Apple have just unveiled the new iPad 4th generation a completely updated version of the iPad 3 by offering new LTE compatability and a Lightning port which was first seen on the iPhone 5.

Specs have remained pretty similar to that of the previous generation release just 6-months ago however there have been some big changes, most notably in the processing department.

The iPad 4th generation has a completely new A6X chip which is 2x faster than the A5 processor and will now beat even the iPhone 5 on processing grunt which has the A6 processor.

Elsewhere the iPad's Retina Display remains unchanged however there have been big changes for wireless performance with the 4th generation iPad now featuring LTE support which will almost certainly result in users being able to get the iPad 4th generation through the EE 4G network.

WiFi has been upgraded with the iPad with Retina Display now offering twice as fast WiFi speeds making it even more capable to deal with the new spectrums.

The iPad with Retina Display will be available to pre-order from October 26 alongside the new iPad Mini with the release date being November 2 and will start at £399.

iPad mini: Launch live blog

We're just days away from Apple's latest launch event which will almost certainly see the company debut a smaller version of its all-conquering iPad tablet. Join us here for full coverage

Apple will hold a press conference next Tuesday October 23, during which the company is widely expected to announced the long-rumoured iPad mini device.

Invites to the 'Special Event' landed in the T3 inbox earlier this week with Apple promising, "We've got a little something to show you" and, while the invite stops short of confirming the device, the clue appears to be in the title. 

As always, we'll be live-blogging events from at the California Theatre in San Jose as they happen, with kick-off expected at from 6pm UK time.

So with almost an entire year of speculation building towards this event, what can we expect from the iPad mini?

Most observers expect Apple to launch a sleek 7.8-inch device to complement the traditional 9.7-inch model, enabling Cupertino to meet the threat from affordable Android tablets like the Google Nexus 7 and the Amazon Kindle Fire.

A purported inventory listing which leaked this weekend suggest that the iPad Mini will also be priced competitively. The inventory screenshot showed the the basic 8GB Wi-Fi may only cost 249 Euros, which translates into £200 with today's exchange rate. However it seems likely that Apple would abandon its premium pricing policy to match the likes of Amazon and Google.

More reports have claimed that Apple will keep the costs down by keeping the device Wi-Fi only, while the new Lightning connector, which debuted on the iPhone 5, is likely to replace the 30-pin connector seen on previous iPad models.

The launch of an iPad mini, in itself, would have been considered a surprise just a year ago, given the late Steve Jobs' well-reported stance on tablet size. He once claimed that 7-inch slates were dead-on-arrival, but reportedly began to warm to the idea in 2011.

Anything else?

Beyond the iPad mini it has also been suggested that Apple will tweak the new iPad 3 model (which was announced in March this year) to incorporate the Lightning connector and 4G connectivity for the soon-to-launch Everything Everywhere 4G network.

More speculation has focused on revamped iMacs, a 13-inch Retina Display MacBook Pro and, to continue the diminutive theme of the event, a revamped Mac mini.

Google Maps for iPhone 5 screen shots leaked

Maybe Eric Schmidt was being coy when he claimed that Google were not working on an iOS version of Google Maps last month as today screen shots have leaked

 

A developer has leaked the first screen shots of what appears to be a native version of Google Maps running on iOS 6 on the iPhone 5 sparking rumours that in fact Google are working on an alternative to the troubled Apple Maps.

Developer Ben Guild posted the images on his blog of Google Maps running on an iPhone 5 which is currently in early testing. According to his source it’s a huge improvement over the previous maps app and brings across features previously only available on Android phones.

The app is vector based which means that it only loads what is required to look great on the page without having to reload the entire map which was a significant weakness of the previous iOS version and cuts down on data usage significantly.

The two-finger map rotation is also present so you can keep track of wherever you go on your iPhone and most importantly it looks great on the 4-inch iPhone 5 display.

It's not yet known when Google Maps for iOS 6 will appear or even if it will at all as Google hasn't yet officially stated they will be releasing an alternative.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini price revealed?

Samsung's Galaxy S3 Mini, a 4-inch version of its flagship handset, is to be price at about £300, according to mobile phones site Clover

 

The Carphone Warehouse and mobile phones site Clover are among the first manufacturers to announce details of pricing and pre-orders of the Galaxy S3 Mini, which Samsung launched in Germany yesterday.

Clover has listed it at £298.80, while highstreet retailer Carphone Warehouse is offering the device for pre-order, although they haven't allocated a price-point just yet.

The phone largely shares the same features as the S3, such as Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, S Voice, Smart Stay, S Beam. Specs-wise it has a Dual Core 1GHz chipset, 5MP AF + LED Flash camera, 8Gb of memory (boostable up to 32GB with a MicroSD card), and a 4.0-inch WVGA Super AMOLED screen.

The phone largely shares the same features as the S3, such as Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, S Voice, Smart Stay, S Beam.
