Today marks the start of RBS and Natwest's first contactless payment trial, which the banks first invited customers to sign up for back in in July.
Available to the first 1,000 participants that signed up, the service allows Apple iPhone 4 and 4s model users to make quick and convenient payments from their mobiles, by way of the NFC (Near Field Communications) enabled covers they received.
The covers, when attached, mean that users can pay for transactions of £20 or less, in any contactless-enabled stores, without even entering a PIN.
While the trial only begins today, a whopping 9,000 people had registered for the 1,000 places available, and the bank has already promised that ‘TouchPay’ will soon be made available to all iPhone users.
Ben Green, head, mobile, RBS, says: "TouchPay has proven incredibly popular and shows that our customers want more flexible and convenient ways to pay."
"Delivered alongside our updated mobile apps, the TouchPay service means that our customers need only carry their smartphone with them to make payments and manage their finances wherever they are."
